Canberra’s roads will be ablaze tomorrow morning with the opening of the Kings Avenue overpass on the famous Hour of Terra course.
The intersection at one of the fastest points on this international renowned training ride will be opened today as the $30 million overpass nears completion.
With Team QUON’s approval the National Capital Authority (NCA) started work on the project in 2009 to improve speed and help more breakaways which often folded at the now defunct roundabout.
The area was considered a major stopping point. Before the works, the Russell roundabout had often slowed this extremely fast ride or even stopped it altogether! Words like “Unbeliverable" could be heard in the peloton.
Ban McFuff one of the lead spokesman for the Government said, the opening of three ramps would go along way in keeping the HoT ride at the top of it’s class.
He said the overpass would improve visiting international cyclists' first impressions of the ACT. ''It will really give a sense of arriving in the national capital,'' Mr McFuff said.
The QM has given his personal approval to the works completed so far. The QM has also been working hard with the ACT government and the NCA to see if further improvements can be made along this great course. It is understood that planning study’s are underway along Wentworth Ave. A Community Consultation night will be held, in the mean time interested parties are encouraged to comment on this site.
The 'Rock' an Elder of the QUON had this to say “Team QUON would like to take this occasion to thank the people of Canberra and the Government for assisting us in making this all possible”.
He went on to say, "some of the best known riders from around the world have busted out on the HoT, including the likes of Michael Rogers, Matt Hayman, Michael Matthews, Rory Sutherland, Team Drapac, Mongo and many more……."
The QUON Master said: ''It will definitely compete with the Monaro as the fastest corridor on the ride”.
To celebrate the new course the rider demonstrating superior speed, guts and determination along the Kings Avenue stretch will be crowned ‘King of Kings’ and will join Mr Monaro as co-alpha rider”.
“We will also see the crowning of the ‘Queens and Princesses’ for all those riders sitting in and refusing to pull a turn. Signs will be placed on the course to advise the Queens and Princesses to follow the exit to the bike path if they haven’t pulled a turn by the Kings overpass”.
The QM encourages all team QUON members to turn up and ride as hard as you can.
